The cinnamon roll is a sweet, spiral-shaped bun made from soft, enriched yeast dough, filled with a buttery cinnamon-sugar mixture. Originating in Scandinavia (notably Sweden, where it's called kanelbulle) and popularized in the United States, this beloved pastry is often topped with a rich cream cheese or vanilla glaze. Soft, gooey, and aromatic, cinnamon rolls are a classic comfort food, commonly enjoyed for breakfast or as a cozy treat with coffee or tea.
Ingredients:
For the dough:
- 1 cup warm milk (around 110°F or 45°C)
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
For the filling:
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
- For the cream cheese frosting:
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Instructions:
1. Prepare the dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add sugar, melted butter, eggs, flour, and salt. Mix until the dough comes together.
- Knead the dough either by hand on a floured surface or with a dough hook attachment in a stand mixer, until it's smooth and elastic, about 5-7 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
2. Make the filling:
- In a small bowl, combine brown sugar and cinnamon.
3. Roll and fill the dough:
- Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle, about 16x21 inches.
- Spread softened butter over the dough and sprinkle evenly with the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Starting from one long edge, tightly roll up the dough into a log. Cut into 12 even pieces.
4. Arrange and bake:
- Place the rolls in a greased 9x13 inch baking pan or two 9-inch round pans. Cover with a towel and let rise again in a warm place until doubled in size, about 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown.
5. Make the frosting:
- While the rolls are baking, prepare the frosting. In a medium bowl, beat together softened butter, powdered sugar, cream cheese, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth and creamy.
6. Frost and serve:
- Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool slightly. Spread the cream cheese frosting over the warm rolls.
Serve warm and enjoy!
